“IT LOOKS LIKE WE’VE GOTTEN a break in the Esbenshade case. We found her. She’s alive,” said Anderson when Adam rolled into the station.

On the drive between dropping off Erica at his parents’ house and the station, he’d gotten a message from Anderson saying the 10-19 had been downgraded and he didn’t need to report in after all. He’d almost turned around and gone back to get her, intent on finishing what they started, but she needed to get Jason home and into bed, and he still needed to check in at the station. Blake would take care of her and make sure she and the kid got home safely. And then tomorrow he’d figure out a way to pick up where they left off.

“That’s good, right?” he asked, dragging his attention away from Erica in his arms and back to the man in front of him.

“Yes and no,” said Anderson. “The alive part is definitely good, but the lead came in when we shook down Mark Stevens’s old partner, Nate Weston. He’s taken over Stevens’s territory and apparently added prostitution to his long list of contributions to society.”

That wasn’t great news. Stevens had been the driving force behind trying to bring meth into the county. He’d also tried to kidnap Adam’s sister-in-law Summer and shot his brother Travis in the struggle. The bastard currently resided at the Virginia state penitentiary for at least another ten years, and Adam intended to be there every time he came up for parole to make sure he served his full sentence.

“Don’t tell me,” said Adam, finally catching up with Anderson. “Weston is taking over the distribution side of the business, too.”

“Looks like it.” Anderson nodded, looking as miserable as Adam suddenly felt.

“Fuck.” They’d worked so hard to keep meth from gaining a foothold in the county. More than any other drug Adam knew of, it had the insidious ability to burn through entire generations of families. He’d seen the damage done in nearby communities when people started using. The only way to fight it was to keep it from taking hold in the first place.

“That about sums it up,” said Anderson, shaking his head. “It looks like Weston is recruiting in the trailer park out on Chestnut. He’s bringing manufacturers like Dwayne under his wing. Makes sense, really. That way he doesn’t risk blowing himself up. He can leave the dangerous stuff to the dumb shits who are willing to help him for a quick high and pennies on the dollar.”

At the mention of Dwayne’s name, something tightened in Adam’s chest. He’d been responsible for hurting both of his sisters-in-law, and he’d made his niece sick. The only good thing he’d ever done was blow himself up. If business was starting up in his old neighborhood, he’d have to keep a closer eye on his family. He didn’t think Travis would survive it if anything happened to Summer or Abby. Adam wouldn’t let that happen.

“Where is he selling?” asked Adam, dreading the answer. Someday they’d be too late to stop things.
